santi

quite a few times we have been here over the past 4 years.

it all started with the solo camino frances in 2022, sparking this new tradition that we try to go on a camino hike every year over easter.

2023 we hiked from verin along a variant of the via de la plata, 2024 it was the camino portuguese da costa from porto, and because it was so wet, in continuation also the inland camino portuguese, 2025 we were on the primitivo from salas. its always about 200-300km.

when we arrive into santi we have an appartment pre-booked. a bit of luxury that we saved up for by sleeping in albergues along the way.

we mostly go to the same places again and again. in the end, the santiago old town isn’t all that big.

and we go to the pilgrims’ mess at 19:30. not so much for religious reasons, but we like to mingle with the people that also have just arrived. it makes for a special athmosphere, when you wish peace to each other and to the world. some people tear up and you give them hugs. its all good.

and we go out to eat. the quality of food in galicia is incredible. must be because it’s so fresh and comes from nearby. ternera, cerdo, pulpo, calamares, vino, licor de hierbas, tarta de queso, tarta de santiago, yadiyadida.

then there is a bit of wandering around aimlessly, going into librerias, not just to browse, but to actually buy books to read en español, more cafes, ice cream, jewelry stores for friendship bracelets and other souveniers.

and we hang out in front of the cathedral some more, observing new arrivals going through similar emotions as we did yesterday.

while this post goes up we are probably just sitting at dinner again. tomorrow we head back home to berlin. until we return to santi again soon. the next adventure waits to start at the end of april. subscribe to my newsletter below and i will keep you informed.
